People in Taiwan no longer have to put up with excessive traffic noise. Aside from a noise hotline, the Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) has set up a new website for the public to report earsplitting vehicles.
Noises created by modified vehicles were hard to clamp down on in the past. Now the public can log on to the new site and report the type of the vehicle, its number plate, and the time of pollution to the authorities, according to an EPA official.
The vehicle owners will then be required to have their cars inspected by the local environmental protection bureaus, said Hsieh Yeih-rui, head of the air quality protection and noise control at the EPA.
In addition, the public can also report noises made by public transportation vehicles. The responsible operators have to make improvements within 180 days.
If noises cannot be reduced, the operators should install noise barriers for the affected residents.
