The International Fair for Manufacturing Technology and Automation (METAV) 2010 held by German Machine Tool Builders' Association (VDW), will take place from 23 to 27 February 2010 at Düsseldorf, Germany. It is the first international metalworking fair in the new year. This edition will not only form a strong motive force for the economic recovery, but also promoted by the organizer as a technology platform for raising the level of enterprises for the entire metalworking industry. This article will cover the METAV 2010 from different aspects.

To meet the recovery with faith

Since mid-2009, there are more and more evidence shows that the economic has already hit bottom. Encouraging news keeps coming from Asia, America or even Europe. Dr. Wilfried Schäfer, executive director of VDW, the organizer of METAV, said, "according to past experience, in general, it takes about 6 months after a recovery was shown in the metalworking demand before the effect transmitted to the machine tool manufacturing industry." There are many clients, especially from automotive industry, are practicing the positioning of new products. To ensure success of the practice, latest developments and solutions for production are needed. METAV is an ideal opportunities for gaining an overview of the full scope of goods and services available.

This is also the very first comprehensive metalworking exhibition launched in Germany since a long period. Dr. Wilfried Schäfer expressed for VDW that, "in fact, due to the reduction of budget and limitation of travel schedule, we anticipated that many of our guest were not able to participate in the MILAN EMO. And for the reason, VDW will strive to build up the professional feature of this METAV to let our guest have a full understanding of the latest developments in the industry.〃

A new turning point for Metalworking in the Electric era

"Electric" is likely to be the main theme in future. Mechanical drive system will no longer be needed in an Electric Vehicle, and this will undoubtedly change the requirement of production technology in future. Obviously, the process will not be finished in one step. In general, the electrification of drive system will cause serious impact on machine tool manufacturers in long run.

Grob-Werke GmbH & Co. KG, located in Mindelheim, Germany, agreed that the trend will trigger the diversification of drive system in future. "The most recent studies are predicting a share of up to 20 % electric vehicles in total registrations by the year 2020", is the message from Grob's boardroom. This also means that only about 80 % of the total volumes will be fitted with "traditional" drives that will lead to a reduction on production of "traditional" drives applications. Certainly, for the time being, it is premature to talk of entire application categories for machine tools vanishing entirely.

The advent of electric cars will likewise mean changes in the production of components for the drive train. The machinery manufacturers should well recognize that there will be increased demand for low-consumption drive. Indeed, major parts of the drive train will disappear in an electric car, however, this also offers us new opportunities in the field of rotatory components and housing production.

Latest grinding technology open up infinite possibilities for low-cost applications

For the grinding seminar special in METAV Düsseldorf, 25 February 2010 will be a special date. On this day, 13 top experts from both the industry and the academic circle will participate the "Dortmund grinding seminar METAV special event" held by the renowned Institute of Machining Technology (ISF) to discuss the development of grinding technology.

The seminar will focus on three topics: "Machines and peripheral equipment", "Tools" and "Processes". It is aim at letting conferees understand the latest application of achievements and development trend of grinding technology through a well-planned information platform. It is worth mentioning that the achievements of these new technologies will encourage designs for the high-performance process and provide low cost application prospects for grinding technology.

"Machines and peripheral equipment" part of the seminar will focus on introducing the development goals, challenges and threats facing and related application of the grinding machine manufacturing. Some of the articles will be covering the problems encountered by multi-family products during production as well as how can modular system to be used to reduce the cost of the production process, and at the same time, elaborating the medical grinding technology which regarded as a new field of application and introducing latest processing concept.

The topic of "Tools" will be covering latest tooling concept, flexible use of cooling lubricants for the production of carbide-tipped tool, as well as using polishing tools on specific metal surface processing, etc.

The "Processes" part will focus on the challenges facing in the designing of grinding process. Related latest research results, relative legal requirements on cooling lubricants, and the application of grinding technology in large rotational parts and engine parts machining will be revealed.

In addition to the grinding seminar, the ISF is also planning a special METAV exhibition named "Grinding technology and precision machining" where companies can present their grinding technologies in a specifically targeted manner and encourage interactions and communications between related personnel.
